Ballywalter Flute Band
Ballywalter Flute Band is from the picturesque seaside village on the Ards Peninsula and was formed in 1953. In common with many leading bands it had its origins in the local Boys Brigade. A melody flute band had been formed by the local company in 1951 but quickly moved to part music and it soon became apparent that the band would not be able to develop within another organisation so amid some controversy the decision was taken to sever connections with the Boys Brigade and so the current band was formed.
The band has a long reputation for high standard of musicianship in parading, contests and concerts and participated in many events throught the year.
The band is affiliated to the Flute Band Association of Northern Ireland and also the North of Ireland Bands Association, the governing body for the running of the annual championship contests. The band has won many awards over the years including first place three times in the World Championship section. Today its competes in the Grade II section and are the current champions, a title they won in the Market Place Theatre, Armagh in October 2018.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the band in 2013 the band applied and were invited to take part in the Lord Mayors Show, which passes many famous landmarks and walks along the famous street of the City of London. The band received a great reception from the spectators who lined the route, and also received excellent reviews from the organisers on their marching, deportm ent and musicianship.
Over the years the band has developed close relationships with other part music flute bands and in particular the Churchill Flute Band from Londonderry, both bands formed a massed band to take part in the 2016 Lord Mayors Show. The massed band received great reviews and excellent television coverage.. Both bands have come together again to provide a performance at this year's Belfast Tattoo and we hope you enjoy the programme.
