Kellswater Flute Band

Kellswater Flute Band was founded in 1947 in the townland of Tullynamullen, four miles South of Ballymena, taking it's name from the river Kellswater, close to where the Band was formed.

Originally Kellswater was a melody flute band, progressing to part music and then to concert flutes.

Their first contest win was in Portadown in 1952, performing the march Everbright. Developing throughout the decades, Kellswater went on to become F.B.A. Grade 1 Irish Champions, S.A.F.B.A. Grade 1 Scottish Champions and N.I.B.A. World Champions. The Band has travelled extensively, performing in Gibraltar, Crete, Gran Canaria and has taken part in the International Band Festival in Limerick and the Lord Mayorís Show in London, showcasing Northern Irelandís flute culture to a wider audience. Kellswater has recorded three cds, featured on Radio Ulster and appeared on the popular BBC Ulster Scots programmes Santer and Music from Brownlow House.

Annual engagements include parading with Church Youth Organisations, The British Legion and Loyal Orders as well as performances at various Concerts. Kellswater has also secured Best Band on Parade on a number of occasions.

Three Band members have won the prestigious Northern Ireland Young Musician of the Year award and performing at the Tattoo tonight are two former winners, Stephen Rankin (piccolo) and Craig Lutton (side drum and xylophone).

Kellswater Flute Band are delighted to be taking part in the Belfast Tattoo 2017 especially during their 70th Anniversary year and would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to founder member Jack McKee who is still actively involved in the Band.
