Drum And Showband Adest Musica (Netherlands)

SSE Arena, Belfast - 4th - 5th September 2015

Drum- and Showband Adest Musica from Sassenheim, The Netherlands, were founded in 1952. In the beginning the association consisted of a harmony-orchestra only, later a drum- and rhythm section was added. In 1963 the harmony-orchestra was closed down. The Drum section however flourished, and 'copper' instruments such as trumpets, trombones, euphoniums and sousaphones were introduced, with the orchestra growing into its present form.

The Drum- and Showband Adest Musica consists of about 55 musicians and ranks since the eighties to the (inter)national top of drum- and showbands. That the band is regarded highly is proven not alone by the large list of requests for appearances in The Netherlands and abroad, but also by the results at tournaments. The 4-yearly World Music Contest in Kerkrade (The Netherlands) for instance, has brought Adest Musica scores of first prices. The last edition of this contest, in 2013, was very successful for the band. The band reached the third place on the international ranking list in the march-series with 92.21 points. The result on the show-series with 'Mother Earth' was 91.63 points. This was high enough for a fifth place on the international ranking list.

The obvious result is that this orchestra is present at all kinds of events many times a year, both in The Netherlands and abroad. In the last two years for example, the band brought performances in Chalon-sur-Saone and Beauvais (France), Trondheim (Norway) and at the World Band Festival in Luzern, Switzerland. Adest Musica was also represented in Germany in 2013, in the so called 'International Music Parade'. This was a short tour through Germany in the cities of Munich, Kempten and Stuttgart, with several performances for ten thousands of people. A highly regarded band, with in the year 2015 as usual lots of performances on tattoos, street parades and shows, for example in Denmark and Luxembourg!

With its high level music and spectacular shows, the band always leaves an unforgettable impression with the spectators. Of course the uniforms, which are derived from the uniforms of the Dutch Royal Grenadiers, add to the impressive view as well. A uniform in a winter version with dark blue trousers and black bearskin hat and a summer uniform with white trousers and (flat) white cap. But of course the repertoire and the devotion displayed by the Adest Musica musicians present the real basic for its success!

Adest Musica officially means 'there is music in it'. Very appropriate, as next to the specific repertoire of marches (the so called 'Adest Sound'), Adest Musica also has a varied concert-repertoire, with among others big band and film music. This various music styles are recorded on several CD's. 'Mother Earth' is the last recorded album, in 2013.

Training of musicians is mainly handled in the youth band, called 'Jeugdband Adest Musica'. This band is counting about 25 boys and girls, with some 25 more trainees. In the youth band the basis required for easy integration into the Drum- and Showband at the age of sixteen is laid, which is achieved by extensive musical as well as drill training.

Musical Director of Drum- and Showband Adest Musica is Rob Balfoort, who has written and arranged the major part of the band's repertoire. Choreography and show training are the responsibility of Frank Ranzijn.
