SSE Arena, Belfast - 4th - 5th September 2015

Based in the rolling countryside close to Armagh City, Killeen Pipe Band are a talented ensemble who currently competes in Grade 3a.

In 1947 several members of Killeen LOL 1249 decided to form a band and under the tutorship of acting Pipe Major Sam King the band stepped onto the road in 1948.

David Megarity was elected the band's first Pipe Major and under his leadership guided the band towards the competition arena.

Jim Hewitt (an experienced solo and band player) was elected the next Pipe Major. His meticulous approach to teaching was well known throughout the pipe band world. In 1987 (due to ill health) Jim stood down as Pipe Major and was replaced by Alex Walker, a native of Londonderry, now living in Craigavon. Under the leadership of Pipe Major Walker, the band won many titles in Grade 4 including the All- Ireland Championship and 2nd place at the World Championships in 1980. In 1981 the band was promoted to Grade 3. When Alex Walker retired, Brian Megarity (a son of the first Pipe Major) was elected and with his cousin Graham Megarity as leading drummer the band won 2 All-Ireland titles, 2 Ulster titles and 2 Major titles. This resulted in the band being promoted to Grade 2 in 1991.

After several years in Grade 2 Philip Boyce joined the ranks and the band elected him as Pipe Major in 2002. Along with his brother Derek (a successful soloist and composer), the band achieved 3 All- Ireland Grade 2 titles in 2005, 2006 and 2008 respectively. The band also achieved prizes at several major championships including 2nd place at the European Championships in 2007 and 2nd place at the Scottish Championships in 2008. After successfully guiding the band to a top 10 finish at the 2010 World Pipe Band Championships the Boyce brothers stepped down in order to progress their piping careers in Grade 1. The drum corps has seen many changes over the years and have also included the dedicated leadership of Lester Megarity, Trevor McGavigan and John Cowan. The band is led on parade by Drum Major Linzi Hamilton. Linzi is currently Ulster Senior Champion and is a former World Juvenile and Junior champion! Current Band

The band is currently under the direction of Pipe Major David Livingstone and Drum Sergeant Stephen Paynter. Both men are long serving band members and are highly competent solo players.

The band currently competes in Grade 3a and performs at local community, charity and Church events. Through recruitment and in-house tuition it is hoped that the band will build on its success for the future.
